White kidney bean Extract (Phaseolus vulgaris)

White kidney bean Extract (Phaseolus vulgaris)

White kidney bean extract, derived from the seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean, family Fabaceae), is recognized for its potential health benefits, particularly in managing carbohydrate metabolism. The common bean, a globally consumed legume, is a significant source of dietary protein.

Key Components and Mechanisms:

The extract's efficacy is largely attributed to its rich phytochemical composition, including polyphenols, lectins, trypsin inhibitors, and various carbohydrates. Notably, it contains an α-amylase inhibitor, which has garnered attention for its potential role in anti-obesity and anti-diabetic applications by interfering with carbohydrate digestion. Specifically, proanthocyanidins (9.4-37.8 mg catechin equivalents/g) and lectins (5-20%) are significant bioactive components. The extract also provides starch, non-starch polysaccharides (dietary fiber), and smaller quantities of mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides.

Clinical Applications and Evidence:

Clinical studies, including animal and human trials, support the use of white kidney bean extract. Research indicates that legume consumption, in general, is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. Specifically, studies have shown that white kidney bean consumption can lower blood glucose levels and significantly reduce triglyceride responses.

Further clinical investigations have demonstrated that P. vulgaris extracts can reduce glycemia and food intake. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, supplementation with a standardized P. vulgaris extract alongside a mixed meal resulted in reduced postprandial glucose, insulin, and C-peptide excursions. Moreover, it suppressed ghrelin secretion and increased satiety, leading to a decreased desire to eat.

Additionally, research suggests that P. vulgaris bean consumption may be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases associated with increased glycemic stress, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
